You mention "now I can't call UK" - does this mean you've been able to do so previously, whilst abroad?
Regardless of whatever billing add-on you have, does your phone show a connection to any local networks? Did you receive a welcome text message on arrival?

Hi,
I have received a welcome text in various countries and here also .
I used to be able to call uk and text and I purchased the 30 min add on too .However , I can't find the balance to check if I have any credit left though it recurring until I return to UK 18.12.23
The only thing that has 'changed' is i added an e-sim but my uk number is still the primary one and the e-sim is just roaming data .

The welcome text is good evidence of roaming being active, you would have had a network connection to do so.
Adding an additional SIM to your phone is immaterial if your EE SIM has continued.
Check your spend-cap status, this would cause some of your symptoms - https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/manage-use/pay-monthly/set-up-and-manage-spend-cap

Hi @glenda67
Is the SIM card pay as you go?
How long ago did you last make a call or send a text?
You can check your balance in your EE app.

Hi , I managed to Skype EE tech support and it seems when i added an esim for data abroad it wiped my UK sim so that's it game over until 18.12.23 . Apparantly i should have removed my sim which kind of defeats the object of 2 lines . Thanks everyone for their help !

Just added an esim abroad off a large well known supplier and it's WIPED my UK sim so I have now NO way of contacting UK or to me unless i use Skype etc for a month until i return . Apparantly i should have removed my sim , which kind of defeats the object of 2 lines , in my case one for data (esim) and one for UK - great ! Technology at it's best...

This suggests that your eSIM has replaced your (presumably physical) existing SIM. In which case - yes, you can only have one SIM active on a number at any given time.
If your other (e) SIM was from another operator and your existing (physical) SIM has continued regardless, then they remain totally separate.
Something here isn't adding up.
