with the release of standalone 5G on iPhone 16s, I wonder if EE will update the icon for 5G like T-Mobile in America where it shows ‘5G+’ to recognise being connected to an SA tower. Or something similar as Apple advertise multiple 5G icons that iPhone can have.

@JoshLangers  It’s not just the iPhone 16s that support 5G SA in case you didn’t know.  In fact when 4G first become available the devices did show LTE but quite a few customers don’t know what that meant at the time and complained about the device not showing 4G so it was changed to 4G.  It’s not a big deal if it does or doesn’t show it you’ll still use the device regardless of the connection type.

Having multiple different icons like you describe is a marketers dream!

It gets fun when "+" is used to indicate what is basically the same underlying connection.

The volume of symbols is confusing and I’m happy that the in the UK. Especially on the iPhone it’s a simple affair.

2G which will show as G or Edge, 3G, 4G and 5G, all be it 3G is no more on EE.

Android devices are somewhat different., you have

2G (Was for calls and SMS) at first
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) was 2.5G, So Calls, SMS and the start of data in 2001, all be it, very very slow
EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) was 2.75G Same as above, but with slight faster data, we’ll just Very slow instead of the 2x Very slow as per GPRS

3G, H, H+ ( All 3G variants) (Now defunct on EE)
4G,  4G+
Volte ( Voice over Long Term Evolution) better know for us as 4G Calling
5G. Other variants at a later date, 5G+ and in the USA 5G uw (Ultra Wide)
You may start to see soon, VoNR (Voice over New Radio), which is 5G Calling
