I phoned a friend of mine from my mobile to his mobile. When he answered I discovered he was abroad in Grenada City in the Windward Islands. I am in the UKand he advised me not to stay on long as the call would be expensive to me. What are the charges likely to be as I had no way of telling that he wasnt in the UK ?

If you were calling a UK mobile, then it's totally immaterial to you whether that phone is in Gloucester, Grenada City or Glasgow - you pay to call the number you have dialled. This is a fundamental of how UK telecoms charging works.
Your friend is the mobile user who is roaming abroad and it is they who will be charged for the "incoming international" part of all calls.

Thanks, that's what I originally thought until he told me different.
