Data usage massively and unexpectedly increased

My normal data usage for over a year  is about 2.5 GB a month. This month it has already gone up to 38.52 - a massive increase. I have absolutely no understanding why as I am not using anything new or more often. Could anybody suggest anything I could try please - I am not very tech savvy although I do try.

Is this for a phone or a mobile data device?

If it's a phone, then the data counter function will itemise your data usage app-by-app and likely enable you to identify the reason for this.
