When i took my newest contract out, to get me the cheapest deal the guy in the shop took out an additional line with data on (this is a SIM only) he said if I run out data on my normal line, i can go into the app and switch to the SIM only line. I can’t seem to find out how to do it as when I click the additional line and go back into the app it comes up with my main line. Am i doing something wrong or just being stupid? lol thanks

You can choose which of 2 SIMs are "primary" for data, voice & text using your phone's settings menu. Both lines will be active for incoming voice & text.
The exact location of this menu varies between Apple & Android.

Oh, I took it that the OP was on about data gifting. Hence the referral to the app. Is it common for 1 phone to hold 2 SIMs from the same provider?

Perhaps the OP could clarify what they've done - I took the comment "additional line" as meaning a second SIM.
Using 2 SIMs from the same network certainly isn't unusual if it's for pricing or differential (work/personal) reasons.
