SSL errors on websites since changing to EE

While with BT I could acces https://www.playnewz.com/
Its related to an old FPS online game I have played for years.

Since changing to EE the site throws SSL errors on connecting.
The site admins say the website is configured correctly and that my ISP may be blocking it.

I can access the website using VPN but the high ping makes it unplayable.

The website is not blacklisted elsewhere as far as I can tell.

If EE is blocking it , please give me the technical reason why.

Hi @somuniq

Thanks for coming to the community.

I've just tried that site myself on my EE broadband, on mobile and laptop and both have loaded for me.

Do you see the SSL errors immediately after loading the page?

Michael

Hello

I figured it out eventually.
Router parental controls were off so I didnt think anything was blocking it.

Accessing the urls sometimes prompted an EE warning about "unsafe site".
The SSL errors were the browser responding to an EE page appearing when a playnewz page was supposed to load.
http traffic inside ssl makes for errors.

Whitelisting the website in the EE interface did NOT work 😞
Disabling the ISP level "safe search" allowed me to access the website and the game loads fine.

I suspect the issue is to do with safe search being overly aggressive in blocking http redirects since it looks like the site has http redirects.
Game resources are accessed via http. Ive contacted the game makers/site admins to suggest moving all links to be https to avoid potential issues.

I would STILL like EE to confirm WHY this website was being blocked specifically.
It is important to know "why" so the site admins can make changes if needed or have their IP whitelisted again.

Hi @somuniq

I'm pleased you managed to get this working. I'm not able to say exactly why it was blocked, but the site admin will be able to flag this to our team if needed and it is affecting other users.

Lesley

The issue is reproducable for the EE tech people to investigate say why its happening.

Enable safe search and access https://playnewz.com

Then see why the service blocked it.

Was it http redirects or what?

The issue is not resolved until EE say "why" this happens.

Please give me contact details that I can pass onto the site owners so they can liaise with you and identify the cause of your erronous blacklisting in "advance web protect".
Thank you.

Hi @somuniq

I have been in touch with our categorisation team and they have confirmed that the website is categorised correctly and isn't blocked by us.

Some many broken issues in the EE App, like circular redirects and unclear navigation.
However today I would like to resolve the SSL issues - appear to be anything the big brother considers bad - like a Brewery Website selling aritsan beer 0% alcohol. I cannot seem to unpick this issue as appears to be caused by an ISP Filter - which I cannot turn off. I know it is the filter as I can see the websire very clearly on my phone - no SSL issues at all.

This is so annoying that I think EE will be toast when contract is up - abd the broken software does not make me feel safe - fed up with the nanny state.
