I want to upgrade online as I have a friends and family code but I keep getting a message saying I am not the account holder please help!!!

If you're the account holder you should be able to set yourself as the 'bill payer' in the manage numbers section of your My EE account.

@Christopher_G : I thought with EE the a/c holder isn't necessarily the bill payer. Is that how it is with EE?

To get full access to bills and upgrading through EE, you have to have 'Bill payer' selected in your My EE account, @XRaySpeX.
The person's name printed on the bills (account holder) does not have to be the bill payer though, you're right.
