Upgrade my phone can I still use my old one till the new one arrives?

Basically I am looking at doing an early upgrade for my phone and I am going to trade my current phone in now for my new one. If I go through with this will my current phone still work until the new one arrives?

The only reason any phone should stop working is if it develops a fault, or is blacklisted for being lost/stolen.

You are free to continue using your phone as you see fit.
