I have tried several times to click on the link to 'change direct debit and it just takes me back to the EE home page. I really should be this difficult there doesn't even seem to be a 'chat' facility. not very high tech

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems changing your direct debit dates online.
You can start a live chat from the help tab in the EE app.
