I have just bought an new Iphone and want to upgrade my contract

I have just bought an new Iphone and want to upgrade my contract.   The contract I am on at the moment finished in 2023 but for some reason when I click on sim only I get a message telling me that I am currently not allowed to upgrade.  Has anyone any ideas where I am going wrong please?

Just to clarify, when you sat your contract "finished in 2023", do you mean that it remains live but was originally re-contracted in 2021 and thus exited the minimum term in 2023?
