What sort of extension cable for router?

Hi all - I'm having broadband installed in a week's time. The way it works out, my main pc location will be about a 20m wire length away from the BT phone socket. I guess I can either run a phone line extension to move the router closer to the PC, or use an ethernet cable from the PC and plug in to an ethernet port on the router (leaving the router next to the phone socket). Either way the extension cable will need to be about 20m; Which would be best do you think? Move the router and use an extension from the BT phone socket, or leave the router close to the BT wall socket and connect the PC via ethernet, rather than wireless?

Many thanks,

Roger.

@RogerH58 Do we take it that you are NOT in a fibre only area, and therefore the system is to be delivered via the OR Master socket? Pushing it a little for the extension cord signal to keep the speed up at 20M length, Cat5e Ethernet to a Switch if you need more than a few ports around your PC would be the best way to go, just depends if you are looking at speed and network around the home.!

@RogerH58  using a phone extension lead (RJ11 extension) is possible, but it will reduce your broadband speed. So where possible an ethernet RJ45 is normally preferable, although you could also use powerline converters that plug into a mains socket and use mains wiring to give you an ethernet connection without wires around the room.

Much will depend on your speeds and what is practical.

But do you also have to consider WiFi around the premices?

Thanks Jim. I'm getting the BB on Monday next. I believe it's mixed fibre/copper. Not sure what the OR Master Socket is - I just have what looks to be a standard BT telephone socket in the wall.

I thinnk you're right about ethernet and a switch. I'm a flight sim nut and will have three or four PCs running.

Thanks again for the advice.

Hi Mustrum.

Thanks for your reply. I'll be going with an ethernet cable to a switch in the area needed - I do have an old set of powerline converters - not sure if there is any speed restriction on them but they're about 17 years old!

Is there any noticeable speed decrease using powerline converters, do you know? If the old ones are slow, I could always buy new.

Thanks again for the advice,

Roger.
