Tp link slowing other ethernet devices

Hi all.

I have ee fibre 300. I use an ethernet cable connection for sky q box and a tp link powerline setup for my bedroom. When the tp link is plugged in I only got 4mbps at my sky q box using netlix app to test. When it's unplugged i get about 120 mbps. After a reset I now get 40mbps, but on ethernet that's quite slow.

Any ideas what to try as I need the powerline for my sky q mini boxes.

Thanks in advance

@RBAILEY What model of EE Router do you have, and also what is the specific model of the TP-Link powerline adapters that you are using? Is this just a new install of the EE router?

Hi jimM11Screenshot_20240630_173457.jpg

It's a  TP-Link TL-PA4010KIT Nano AV600, but I've tried a different  tp link device too and same issue.

It's a smart hub plus, (screen shot).

Many thanks

@RBAILEY The TP-Link has a 100mb/s Ethernet port so max speed on ethernet will be around 90mb/s depending on your electrical connection, and you CANNOT have any of the modules at EITHER end plugged into a POWER STRIP, they have to be in the mains socket's, i have just tested mine by plugging in laptop ethernet, as i have only fttc the ookla speedtest ran at my 40/10 split 38.69/8.36 speeds.

Thanks for the info.

The bedroom tp link is in a 4 gang extension, but the main one connected to the router isnt., I'll swap it when I can get to the wall socket (wardrobes in way). Would this slow the other ethernet devices that are directly plugged into the router?

Cheers

I'm getting 89mbps at the other end of the powerline as it is (plugged into a 4 gang with tv etc. It'd just the other ethernet devices are slow as if the tp link was taking all the bandwidth/speed

@RBAILEY If i remember correctly your Q box has 100mb/s interface, as is the Hive hub, and also your Tp-Link powerline, each of the 4 lan ports on the EE router is 1Gb/s ethernet interface, so you have nothing that can go that fast on any of the EE Router lan ports, if you have a PC/Laptop with a Gb/s ethernet you could test that, theoretical is 970mb/s, but as you have only fibre 300 expect around the 270mb/s mark. HTH If you are getting good speed with the Power Strip connection then leave as is, just keep in mind that it can cause an issue at any time....  And no, the ethernet port standard is run at independent speed per port, but your cable has to have all 8 cores connected to get the Gb/s range, your powerline will only have the 4 cores connected, pins 1,2,3 and 6.

@RBAILEY Sky Q and mini, had a recent FW update, and had a major issue on ethernet connection and causing a storm condition on the network, You really need to go to the Sky Help forum and find out what is the latest FW for both devices and check that they are at that. If you suspect a Ethernet Speed issue, than disconnect BOTH Q and TP-Link to remove them at the back of the EE Router. You can leave off to test, but sky forum has very mixed views on the Q box causing problems.

I'll give ee and sky a call and see if there's any common probs.

Thanks for your help with this 👍

@RBAILEY Your EE Smarthub+ is up at the latest FW, so you do not have to worry about that, i have been running the EE router since Mid march, with zero issues apart from a sync profile that OR sorted 1 month ago, and think the fibre 50 that EE put me on was just 2 aggressive as normal 40/10 with previous ISP sky, was good and rock solid, same as EE is now last month of operation.  You are on fibre fttp, so you just need to establish your baseline, Laptop/PC plugged into your spare router ethernet, speed test and when everything on your network is fairly quite, then 270mb/s on that ethernet test would be good result.... HTH👍
