I have recently changed over to the new fibre broadband router but my existing smart bulbs will not connect 

I have been connecting them to the 2.4ghz band but no luck...have also been sent a replacement router still no luck. My Amazon Alexa smart plug works fine. And even my LG washing machine which is out in the garage.

Am sure I'm not the only one with this problem as most people use smart bulbs these days for security

With the white EE Smart Router, unlike the black EE Smart Hub, you cannot separate the wireless bands/SSIDs. The most you can do is on the Advanced > Wireless Settings page to temporarily disable the 5 GHz band & move off the Smart channel while connecting problematic 2.4 GHz devices.

Which router have you?

For the black EE Smart Hub, but not the white EE Smart Router, try separating the wireless bands/SSIDs. On the Advanced > Wireless Settings page of the SH there is a button near the top to Separate the Bands. Turn it ON. Then the 5GHz SSID will appear starting with "5GHz-" & the 2.4 GHz SSID not starting with "5GHz-". Then connect your devices to the 2.4 GHz SSID if they can't do 5GHz. The white Smart Router doesn't allow this.

I have the latest white router the rectangular one.

When I first had the smart bulb problem EE split the band for me so if I connect to 2.4 it runs at 192Mbps and if I connect to 5 it runs at 866 Mbps

The app I'm using is Smart life I have tried another and the interface looked exactly the same. I'm even making sure I'm connected to the 2.4 on my phone while trying to connect the smart bulb..I have even bought a different brand of smart bulb. They just will not connect to this new white router

The Avatar is the original brand working on the old black EE router

And smart life app is being used also tried a different one can't remember the name interface was more or less identical

Am I right in thinking if I disable the 5 Ghz then try and connect the smart bulbs using the 2.4 Ghz they will work. But would I have to stay permanently on the 2.4 Ghz for them to continue working...and not be able to get the benefits of the fast 5 Ghz

Should do. Once you have connected the smart bulbs to the 2.4 GHz band you may re-enable the 5 GHz band.
