Replacement Router Suggestions

lukehook

Hi all,

I've recently been set up with Full Fibre FTTP Broadband through EE. I work from home and however have since noticed that I can no longer connect to my work computer remotely (via VPN) as I have been able to do previously. I've looked through this forum thoroughly and have find multiple people with the same issue that is (regardless of EE's denial) an issue with the SmartHub routers they provide.

I therefore wish to replace the router with one of my own but have a couple of questions.

1) Does anyone have a reasonably priced suggestion for an alternative that would work with the FTTP set up I have (I assume any router will do with this setup as I don't believe there is a requirement for VLAN)

2) I have a mesh network of BT WholeHome wifi disks that handle the wi-fi network so it's not actually a requirement to have wifi built in

3) Once I have a new router, where do I source the information required to set this up. I believe there always used to be a username (email?!?) and password that was required to set up any new router (or is this passed down through the line?)

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

  1. Practically any router-only will do such as this TP-Link AC1200 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router (or better) from Amazon, which is proving popular with those wishing to replace the EE SH.
  2.  .
  3. In Home Broadband settings you'll find almost everything you need to set up your own router.

Hello @lukehook ,

Welcome to the community,

I have always used Netgear routers, you may want to take a look there.

If you do not have your username and password, you should find those on the box itself, I believe, otherwise you may have to ring customer service.

To contact EE customer service dial 150 from your mobile phone or ring customer service for free using Skype or another phone: +44 800 079 8586 or +44 800 956 6000.

Thank you both so much both for your help. Really useful recommendations. I’ve gone with the TP-Link.

I was issued with a new BT router a few weeks ago when our ee broadband contract was renewed.
There is no improvement to my WiFi speed and no discernible change apart from regularly having to pause my Surfshark vpn in order to open sites, like this one! Although I logged into ee page without pausing vpn.
Why would ee tell me to use this bt router when the original was fine?

+ I can’t get any advice on sending back the old router.

@cluthab : Which BT router? Which EE router did it replace?
