I would much rather buy a Netgear, TP-Link, <insert another reputable brand here> router than use any hub from EE. They are crippling features, for example custom DNS, DDNS, and an in-built web admin interface are all absent from the Smart hub but were features on previous hardware like the BrightBox models. And users are being forced to use the EE app for smartphones to manage their routers, but the app is fundamentally an advertising platform for EE first and you have to go into sub-menus to access the router management features. And to top it off, the app is buggy, slow, unreliable and is a lesson in how not to do usability. I would definitely not be getting excited for any future hardware they produce.

@Ben570 I use a TP Link deco BE65. TP don’t have a web interface it’s all done through an app on your phone. Apart from that feature I’m the same as you. 3rd party equipment is typically much better than ISP supplied hardware. The only negative thing about the new EE router etc for me. Is it gonna be affected like the Smart Hub Plus and the iOS and android EE app. It was a complete mess and still is for many customers accessing parental controls WiFi enhancer and account details and so on. Hopefully EE have fixed all that with the new router but time will tell.

I always get so close to buying my own router and then I look at the reviews.
There are always plenty of "don't waste your money" review types. A 'Quality' router is not cheap.
So some genuine user experiences would be very helpful, especially for 1gpbs +

I prefer my own router set up too but - if this is going to be given to next gen fibre customers for free - it’s a good way of running WiFi 7. I also wish DDNS was available.
does anyone know if you can set up a local VPN to connect as if local to the network whilst away? I use this a lot

I share your sentiments. The best thing I did was get my own router, EE's app is shocking, I lost count how many times I tried to access the WiFi settings...

If you asking is the Smart Hub Pro has a native VPN server built into it then no, it doesn't. Nothing stopping you from running a server on a machine (e.g. Raspberry Pi) behind the router though.

- I have broadband with ee but working away in London and need wifi in Broadband & Landline
- EE full fibre with Smart Hub Plus - fast broadband but SLOW wifi! in Broadband & Landline
- SmartHub SH31B no longer broadcasting SSID after power cycle in Broadband & Landline
