Heading off to uni? Your guide to the must have tech

Techna-pro

It’s that time of year again, when students excitedly head off for their first year at university. If that includes you, then apart from hard work and studying, your next few years are going to be filled with lots of new experiences and fun adventures (which means Insta opportunities aplenty). Which is why you’ll want to make sure that you’re kitted out with all the latest and greatest tech.

Budget-friendly phones

Firstly, if you’re a die-hard Apple fan you could opt for one of their older models, such as the iPhone 7, which still has most of the functionality you could want but at a much lower price. You can create very social media-worthy pics on its 12MP camera, download all the apps you could ever want from the App store, and if it’s on EE certain plans will mean you’ll get free access to Apple Music for six months.

If Android is more your thing, take a look at the Samsung Galaxy J6 or Huawei P smart. They both have a lot of the same features, including a large touchscreen that’s great for jotting down notes when you’re in a lecture, and a camera that’ll help you score plenty of Insta followers.

Another very cool but pocket-friendly option is the Hawk from EE. It’s a seriously good looking phone thanks to the Gorilla Glass casing, which also makes it hard-wearing. Inside the box you’ll find a pair of JBL headphones, perfect for popping in your ears on the commute to classes (and making the most of your free six-month Apple Music subscription).

Student discount on phone plans

To save you even more money, EE has teamed up with UNIDAYS to offer 20% off a range of handsets and SIM Only plans for university students. They’ll also give you an additional 500MB of data each month on top of your plan allowance, so you can browse, download and share without worrying about running out of data.

The best tablets for students

You’re probably going to need more than just a phone, right? What about a new tablet? There are some amazing new high-spec offerings out there that are just as powerful as a laptop, but a lot lighter to carry around with you. If the iPad Pro is a little bit out of reach financially, maybe consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab A. It has an anti-glare feature which automatically adjusts the screen brightness in low-light conditions – great for late night studying or reading in bed. And the sleek, modern design fits perfectly in your hands.

Alternatively you could go for a ‘good as new’ iPad from EE, which is a device that has been bought by a customer but then returned within 14 days. It comes boxed like new, and will have been fully inspected, but could save you a tidy sum compared to the price of a brand new one.

Connecting wirelessly

There’s nothing like a wireless connection to make you want to spend all your time online (studying of course!). If you’re going to be sharing a house, find out if it’s already got a broadband connection. If not then EE broadband could be a good shout as it costs from just £19.50 a month including line rental, and it’s only an extra £8 to add on EE TV. There are also 4G Wifi mini’s from £13 a month, which are pocket-sized routers that keep your tech connected when you’re out and about.
