It has been a year since EE became the first network to bring cutting edge 5G connectivity to the UK market all the way back in May 2019. In the time since, the network has grown in so many ways which will be celebrated here today.

At launch, EE had 5G coverage in the UK's four nation capitals: Edinburgh, Cardiff, London, Belfast, as well as Birmingham and Manchester - six locations. Now the list extends to a whopping 80!

But it is not just about location number, having contiguous experience in the areas they live and work is what customers seek, after all it's no use only having 5G stood in one place in town! To this end, the number of 5G masts in each area has been increasing substantially, helping both continuity and average speed.

In fact, EE has the highest 5G availability compared to all other 5G networks, in eight major UK cities, according to independent testing from IHS Markit's RootMetrics.

There have also been many developments under the hood to help both 4G and 5G performance. These include additional 4G spectrum in busy areas and evolved backhaul architectures to ensure that masts are not slowed down by their connection to the rest of the network.

The devices and plans on offer have also changed substantially; EE currently stock 5G from the budget conscious Galaxy A90 5G all the way up to the Galaxy Fold, with handsets from Huawei and Oppo also in the line.

Complimenting these devices are a wide range of newly released plans:

  • 'Essentials' includes a fixed data quantity, unlimited calls and SMS, and data gifting
  • Smart Plan with fixed data: a fixed amount of data, unlimited calls and SMS, Swappable Benefit, Reserve Data and data gifting
  • Smart Plan with Unlimited data: as above but with unlimited data

For those who want to bring their own device, there are also a range of new SIM-Only tariffs too.

All in all, a very busy first year!
