I have an old iPhone which I want to give to my mum but my current password doesn’t work. How can I retrieve the password or unlock the phone?

Current pwd to what? You shouldn't need a pwd to unlock a device.
You can just apply for unlocking by using the Unlocking your device form and giving its IMEI no., which you can obtain be dialling *#06# into its keypad.

@Andy1933 if you mean the password to open the device so you can gain access to it because you don’t know the password then you to restore the device with iTunes on a PC by putting the device into DFU mode you can look this up on YouTube on how to do this.
just search iPhone ( model ie 6 , 7 ,X ) restore DFU mode.
