I have set up a sim for my Apple Watch but when trying to use it away from my iphone it is failing to connect

Welcome to the community,

Have you left your phone on? It has to be left on, otherwise the cellular watch will not work when out of range from bBluetooth. 

I take it you have set up cellular correctly? You can check this on your watch either in settings or by scrolling up, it should show there, if not can you switch on to connect to cellular, you can also check via the watch app on your phone.

Phone is on and cellular set up - it tries to connect then says no connection

Can you try disconnecting your watch from your phone and setting it up again?
