unlock phone IMEI number not verifying on ee website

My old samsung a70 IMEI number will not verify so cannot get an unlock code, can anyone help.  I went into an EE shop and they said I had to phone EE.  I did this and get an unlock code that didn't work.  I haven't phoned them again as took 30 minutes for them to answer last time
