I can't remember my password! I've tried every one I've ever used and I have no idea. Is there some way of retrieving it?

If there was a way of retrieving a lock-PIN for a phone, then that effectively blows device security wide open to anyone who knows of that method!
You may ultimately need to factory reset the phone and thus lose all data that is stored on it. There's some further help on Android passwords at https://support.google.com/android/answer/7663172?hl=en-GB & https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/forgot-android-passcode/
