Cold calls claiming I called them

everusty
Visitor

I am getting calls every other day from different mobile numbers that I don't recognise.

When I text back and ask who it is or in one case answered the phone, the other person claims that I called them, which is simply not true.

Phil in Plymouth (tech) said that scammers mask their cold calls with a UK mobile number and tend to change there numbers they use every 3 weeks which should stop.

I would like EE and the telecomms industry to do something about this asap as my mobile number is linked to me directly. The people being called by scammers hiding behind my number are likely to be reporting my number as a source of nusance calls. I have also reported someone who called me asking why I called them, and in retrospect they were probably innocent also.

The inductry needs to get on top of number masking asap!

Hi @everusty

Welcome tot he community.

What you have described sounds like call spoofing. I'm sorry to hear that your number may have been used with this tactic. Hopefully these will stop for you soon.

Spoofed calls are not just targeting UK residents, these calls originate from all over the world. This is a worldwide problem. Both the UK and international regulators are working with the telecoms industry to solve this problem.

My wife gets a few calls a week from various industry or business with no commonality, from across the UK. It started out 1 or 2 per month.

Other than block them what can you do?

Hi @Spencer74

Welcome to the community.

If it's a regular occurrence, you could change the mobile number. I know people are reluctant to do this, it's just a worst case scenario.
