Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.
Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.
I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

@Christopher_G
hi Chris,
seeing as this is an issue for a number of us - hence us posting here - would it not be better for your team to pass this onto the mobile care team to have this investigated?
Unfortunately, the feeling I get from this thread is that we won’t be getting much help with this nor a clear plan of action or outcome.
would it be possible for an advisor to take ownership of this and have it looked into?

I'd second this. I had further calls yesterday and when I called back the number from an unrelated phone, it was someone who insisted that they had not called me and maintained that they had the same issue. All the number start 07877 123... that are calling. I'm not sure what people would achieve by this, however I also recently had texts from a random number giving a verification code several times.
Something fishy is going on for sure. Whether this is simply an 'attempt' at phishing or spoofing, I feel it must have triggered your threshold for actively looking into this.
I tried calling one of the numbers but had no idea which option to select and as I was at work I didn't have time to take on your automated system to try and speak to the right department.
Please look at our accounts and see if you can work this out.

The reality is there's nothing EE can do in the short term.
Unless you recognise the number calling you, there's little point in using whatsapp to see who it is or sending them a message, it won't have come from them.
OFCOM need to come up with a plan for the longer term like STIR/SHAKEN type CLI authentication, but that's years off and needs the industry as a whole to comply.
Networks could block UK CLI from international sources, but that has legitimate uses too, like when a UK company has a foreign call centre and uses a UK presentation number.
Basically, EE is not the originating network that sends the fake number, so they can't do anything about it.

I too have recently experienced the same issues that others have described on this thread in the past days, incoming calls that seem to have the same first eight or seven digits that are the same as the EE mobile number that I make use of, then an automated recorded message about "issues with National Insurance".
I text 7726 with "call XXXXXXXXXXX" to report
I guess there is nothing else we can do besides report the number and block/delete the call entry.

I've been experiencing the exact same thing over the last week! A quick Google search brought me to this forum and I'm genuinely astonished to see the amount of EE customers going through the same thing... sounds incredibly dodgy! I returned a missed call towards the beginning of the week without paying much attention to the number, they answered and claimed they never called me...? Wouldn't be surprised if EE release a statement on leaks/security breaches within the next few weeks. Hopefully the calls will subside.

I am also having the same issue! I’ve had calls from 5 different numbers, all with identical numbers to mine in the first half. I often miss them but of the two answered, the line just goes dead.

Experiencing the exact same thing this week! Identical numbers to mine except the last three digits calling and asking me why I am calling them etc. Has there been a security breach or not? My contract ends this year and will not be staying on with EE at this rate!!

Hi @TC95
Thanks for posting.
As @James_B advised, unwanted marketing calls and number spoofing (where nuisance callers and criminals deliberately alter the caller ID) are problems that affect users of all mobile networks and aren't an indication of a data breach.
You can find out more about number spoofing on the Ofcom website.
If you want to report the call to EE Just text 'call' to 7726 followed by a space, then the number that called you, we use the data collected to help protect all of our customers.
Leanne.

Just jumping on this thread to say I've also had two calls over the last two days from two different numbers, very similar to mine apart from the last 3 digits. I'm concerned that my number could also be used in the same way and if reported it will be blocked.
Annoyingly my contract is fairly new so I can't even leave EE, but come July 2022 I won't be renewing.
This seriously needs investigating, it can easily affect the mental health of others.
