Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

Hi,

I appreciate your reply however I don’t like seeing that every reply from EE that we are getting seems to be a generic copy and paste job instead of actually addressing people’s concerns. Also advising people on all of these measures like changing their number, reporting them to EE etc. seems like a lot to ask of people (the hassle of then having to let everyone know of this change etc) seems like a unfair way to treat customers considering they’re the ones being targeted and harassed.

I have been having this problem several times myself however I am unable to find people having a similar problem on other networks other than EE (as an above in an EE answer started that all networks have this problem). I have found that searching the numbers who have called me through google shows me that they’re all also EE numbers. You’ve requested that we report these numbers to EE however if they ARE other EE customers, as it appears they are, surely reporting them will just cause these customers further problems? Seems like a data breach to me and even if it’s not we, as paying customers, are owed the courtesy to have it looked into instead of palmed off.

I would appreciate an actual reply instead of the copy and paste messages that have come previously in the feed. Thanks.

I totally agree with this. this matter needs addressing and investigating.

I have a work mobile phone provided by my company (also on EE) and have noticed this happening with this number now for the past few days.

I have only had my personal number for a few months - this really shouldn’t be happening.

I have noticed a a massive increase in spam calls in the last year or so (I’ve been with EE for many years).

Hi @LJC22,

Your spam calls won't be from actual EE customers, but the caller ID is spoofed to look like a mobile number similar to yours.

You can find out more about number spoofing on the Ofcom website.

James

I am also experiencing this. I’ve had 2 calls today and only the last 3 or 4 are different to my number.

The first one sent me a text with a screenshot accusing me of calling them for 40 seconds just a few mins before their call which was impossible as my phone was in another room.

The second call I rang back and it refused my call. I’ve checked the WhatsApp profile and there is a legitimate photo it looks like on there.

Very concerning.

Hi @s_corcoran,

I'm sorry to hear you have been a victim of number spoofing. Which WhatsApp profile are you referring to, the profile for your number?

James

No, it’s the picture of the person who called me. Not mine.

I always save unknown numbers to see if there is an active WhatsApp profile.

No, for the person who called me.

Do the calls show in your call log, @s_corcoran?

Chris

@Christopher_G the inbound calls do but the first person who called me, accused me of calling them just a minute before and even sent a text showing this but this was not in my call log. My phone was in another room so impossible for me to have called them

OK thanks, @s_corcoran.

I'd recommend speaking to our Mobile Care team so they can look into this.

Let us know how you get on.
