obtain eSIM before receiving physical SIM?

Greetings.

I've added a second pay monthly line to my account. While the help articles on the EE web site mention the possibility of ordering an eSIM and then downloading it using information in the order confirmation email, I could not find any option to order an eSIM in the EE iPhone app or on the myEE web site--all order options were for a physical SIM.

While I've not received the physical SIM yet for the new line, today both the EE app and the myEE web site have started showing the new line's number and tariff (selectable alongside my original line and tariff). I can see that there is an option to replace the current SIM with an eSIM.

My question is this: is it possible for me to do this replacement of the physical SIM (which I have not yet received in the post) with an eSIM, so that my son can start using the second line of service without waiting for the physical SIM to arrive in the post? More specifically, I don't want to be stuck if the replacement requires receiving a PIN using the physical SIM. The myEE web site warns that the old physical SIM is needed to receive the PIN before the replacement eSIM can be downloaded. The EE app, however, makes no such warning: it asks the number to issue a replacement eSIM for, and warns that the replacement can only be downloaded once. I haven't gone ahead in the EE app beyond this point, though, because I worry that in fact, despite the absence of a warning in the app, there may be a requirement to receive a text using the physical SIM before the eSIM can be downloaded.

It occurs to me that perhaps the EE app can authenticate my first line, and as a result, the eSIM download process might not need to send a text to the physical SIM when done via the EE app. But it may just be that the app is missing the warning, and I'd get stuck trying to download a replacement eSIM this way.

Can anyone tell me if downloading a replacement eSIM in the EE iPhone app requires receiving a text using the physical SIM?

@BNKBNK  You can not activate the eSim without the physical sim first as you’ll receive a text to that number to confirm that you want to change it to the eSim.  You have to activate the physical sim first and once it’s activated you can request the eSim.   Personal I wouldn’t do it if you don’t need to use the eSim.  

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.
