How long until I should activate my new SIM?

Good evening all, 

My uncle received a new EE sim card by mail in September for a data package I like and he doesn't want it, so he's given it to me. I like the phone number. When is the latest I should activate the SIM before EE recycles the phone number and gives it to someone else?

I know for O2 its something like 1 year and ASDA 3-4months. Does anyone know EE's? 

The letter the sim card came in was lost by my uncle.

  • If it's on PAYG it's usually 6 months.
  • If it's on contract he's paying for it & so it's for as long as he pays.
