Using phone in Japan

Drewbags

Hi!
my daughter is going to Japan and we are trying to find out:

A. If she will be able to use her iPhone in Japan

B. Is there an add on we can buy that will mean she can use her phone (calls, texts, data) as normal

I called EE and the lady I spoke to didn’t seem to know what she was talking about and I was told Roam Further would work! From what I’ve found this is only for EU + 5 countries not including Japan!

Anyone got any helpful suggestions please?

Hi @Drewbags

Thanks for posting 🙂

You can find the charges and available add-ons in our Roaming in Japan Help page.

Please make sure the phone is set up to use abroad, to do this log into your My EE account online go to Menu > Account Settings > Parental and Data Controls > Enable Roaming and also Make calls abroad from the UK > They will show as ticked if roaming and calling abroad is activated.

Please see our EE Roaming - Getting ready to use your phone abroad, article for more information.

Thanks.

Leanne.

Roaming in Japan will be quite costly, you can find more info here: https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/japan#

Looks like you can use add-ons but they look quite expensive for a relatively low allowance.

100 SMS for £6.84 (per month)

60 Minutes for £11.40 (per month)

150MB for £6.85 (per day)

Might be better off getting a travel sim or a local sim from the airport.

In addition to the excellent advice above, if she is on contract, she should remember to text ROAMING to 150 before she leaves UK to check roaming is enabled on her account.

The add-ons & their prices listed earlier are only for contracts, not PAYG.

Hi, i'm travelling as well, but 150mb per day doesn't seem very good to be honest. I will also be on a cruise so i'll be in vietnam hong kong singapore as well as japan. So i'm a bit confused as to what i'm supposed to do. Thanks in advance

@nicomallourides : All you can do is remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure roaming is enabled on your account.

As none of those countries are in EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/.
