Stand alone 5g eSIM

I’ve just got a text from EE saying I can get enhanced services in the 5g stand alone service and need to update to a new eSIM.

Is this likely to be a genuine message from re? Has anyone/everyone else had this?

There's no such thing as a 5G SIM, there's an EE SIM which supports all available "G"

The message you've received may be a scam - please post up the exact message you've received, word-for-word.

Also what number did the message come from?

Like @bristolian mentioned, there's a chance that the message you've received here is fraudulent, so popping up a screenshot of this would definitely be a good call. 

We do actually require some customers to update their SIMs though; whilst any EE branded Pay Monthly SIM will work with 5G, for the upgraded 5G Standalone this requires a newer SIM. 

If you have a physical SIM from before September 2021, this will need to be switched to a newer physical SIM or eSIM. 

If you have an eSIM already then this should be good to go with 5G SA.

@JEHIACT Thank you for providing the message, I can confirm this is a legitimate message. As @Peter_W mentioned it will mean you have a 5G standalone capable plan but we have identified your SIM is not compatible.

If you wish to move to an eSIM to take advantage of 5G standalone you can follow the instructions in the message or you can also login to your online account in the app, selecting Manage>Settings> Replace my SIM/eSIM.

If you prefer to still use a physical SIM but want to update to a new one for 5G standalone you can also request one for delivery or pick one up from an EE store with photo-ID.

You can also continue to just use your current SIM, your service will continue to work but you just wont be able to take advantage of 5G standalone until you do update the SIM.

To add some background explanation for the OP here..

5G networks come in "NSA" & "SA" flavours. In "Non Standalone" mode, the 5G network operates as an extension of the 4G network, and whilst your data will be carried over both networks as required, voice calls will fallback to 4G-VoLTE.

In 5G-"Standalone" mode, when in 5G service your phone will be using 5G exclusively without recourse to 4G. When outside of 5G, 4G continues as normal.

Thus this message is to advise that your current SIM only supports 5G-NSA, but without getting into detail that most customers won't care for.
