I have appalling call quality and relate to what you are saying.
It's been ongoing now for 2 years +.
Garbles calls, people can't understand what I'm saying. So much so, EE told me it if contrast so I was free to go elsewhere. I haven't yet.
Wi-fi calling doesn't seem to help either. My WiFi is EE. The speed and sigbal on WiFi for other device connections seems very good. However, Wi-fi calling doesn't provide a reliable or acceptable solution.
I'm wondering if the antenna in this model of phone isn't sensitive enough to hold a call where signal maybe weak. EE say I should have full service and no problems.
A friend of mine, with same make of phone also has issues in and around Leicester.
Currently looking at weather certain antenna/wireless components vary in quality and if phone providers cut back in these areas to sell affordable phones?

I relate to this, exactly.
Wi-fi calling not much help either. EE also provide my WiFi.
I have Nokia XR20 also.
I'm beginning to think Nokia wireless antenna on the handset may not be sensitive enough. That doesn't answer your husband had great service then 2022 all downhill.
I've suffered for over 2 years. Coincidentally when I switched to a 5G contact when I got the XR20.
Frustrating. So much so, EE rolled me out of contrast as they exhausted all avenues. I've been it if contrast since Oct 2022. I can move but struggle with. I'm considering upgrading to a higher quality handset.

Just found this reply on Reddit. Seems plausible:
Solved microphone issue on my XR20
So, I basically disabled the microphone access from my Google app and everything works just fine. I called and used my phone from afar and everyone who I called could hear me. I then gave the Google app access to microphone and then the issue occurred again and so now I've disabled microphone access to Google app. It did say that some basic features on my device won't work properly but I don't use Google assistant at all.
Is this a solution? Did I do something wrong?

Different hardware has different radio performance, that's quite common - on both network & terminal equipment.
