Sounds very much like well-intentioned hearsay, also people tend not to call EE shops to report their phones are working well - so they will only hear negative reports.
The status checker you've used has an option to "report a problem" after you've run a status check. Have you used this? That will send a report to EE network teams who are best placed to deal with fault reports.
