Email from ee, 10 days ago to say work in our area xxxxxx starts on Monday 5th December and might cause interruption to service, now have non existent signal and wi -fi calling hit and miss, how much longer does this work go on for.

Did the email specify the duration of the planned works?
The best place to check is the "check status" option on https://coverage.ee.co.uk/network/ee
What's the issue with WiFi-calling - in what way is it "hit and miss"? if you have a reliable WiFi signal & broadband connection, it should be a reliable way of using your phone indoors.
