Is there a 4G successor to the discontinued 3G booster box?

As many now know, EE are discontinuing the service of their excellent 3G Booster box, and after 7 fabulous years of 5 bar coverage use, I got 3 weeks notice of this. My phone does NOT have WiFi calling option, so I'm a bit snookered. I don't want to buy a new phone, current one is working perfectly, besides, think of all the poor dolphins in throwing perfectly good stuff in the bin unnecessarily!

Is anyone aware if there is a 4G 'booster box' available that will work for me, preferably supplied by EE? (or a generic one as an alternative)

Hi @nosignalbox

It doesn't really matter if EE say it's not supported, it's whether it works. As @James_B says, have you tested it by going into airplane mode and switching wifi on?

not working.

Oneplus 3T does have wifi calling option in menu. But I have read that EE need to activate device.

EE saying they only support 6T or above.  So I must upgrade whether I want to or not.

I just wish I had been given adequate notice of signal box switch-off

I did see this. ..  but its all a bit techie for me!

phones and Wifi Calling

Just thought I would add to this thread having finally got a couple of non EE purchased One Plus phones working on wi-fi calling.

As per the solution on this page I called EE to enable wi-fi calling on both our SIM only plans - using One Plus 3T and One Plus 5T phones bought directly from One Plus.  This did not work, despite EE working through the problem with me.  To be fair they tried hard to get it working including raising it with second level support who confirmed that despite all settings being set for wi-fi calling (on the EE side as well as on the phone) there were no wi-fi calls being made.  Part of the confusion is that different phone display the fact that they are using wi-fi calling differently.

After a few calls to EE their recommendation was that I should get new One Plus 6T handsets direct from EE.  The explanation being that this has the right firmware installed.  I was on the verge of going down this route when my wife said to me that she saw a weird message about wi-fi calling come up on her phone when linked to the wi-fi at a holiday rental.  This made me think that maybe it was working and that it was something to do with our ISP or even our wi-fi at home.  Sure enough after some research and help from my ISP (IDNet) it came down to a setting on the router to disable IPSEC.  As soon as I made that change wi-fi calls came through.

In summary:

* One Plus phones bought direct from One Plus on a SIM only plan with EE can get wi-fi calling.
* There doesn't seem to be any 'special' firmware that needs to be loaded specific to EE.
* The phones are One Plus 3T and One Plus 5T - both running Android Pie (that is significant I think as before the upgrade to Pie the wi-fi setting was not available on the phone).
* You will need to call EE and ask for wi-fi calling to be activated on your account
* If you have problems I suggest trying on different wi-fi networks.  In my case disabling IPSEC on my Billion router fixed the problem

I've had many OnePlus phones and if the wifi calling menu was shown, it has worked. If you are on a suitable plan, I don't believe EE have to enable it, it's just on my default. Are you on a standard EE contract plan?

There was an issue with OnePlus phones and the wifi calling option wasn't available, and you had to use logkit to enable it, but as you have the option, that isn't the case here. If it's enabled on the phone, and your plan supports it, it should work.

You can always tell EE you have a supported OnePlus handset and see if they'll enable it, but I don't believe they should have to? (I'm sure someone will be along to comment if I have that wrong)

I on on payg.

ee not so helpful so far.

my intuition says that I should be able to use my one plus 3t wifi calling, but it isn't woking at present.

That's right @chistery - WiFi Calling doesn't need to be manually activated at account level.

@nosignalbox  Just to check, you are connected to WiFi when you are trying the WiFi calling? Your phone may have switched it off when you went to airplane mode, but you should be able to manually switch WiFi back on..

Yep

I am on WiFi. OnePlus 3T WiFi calling is enabled.

Other family members iPhone WiFi calling working fine.

Just came off phone call to EE technical. They too advise that 6T or above
is required despite the 3T having WiFi calling option

Much as I despise Apple, all their phones appear to be WiFi calling compliant - shame Android is hit & miss...

@stephen5000  .. if it helps I have a Galaxy S10 plus which definitely does WiFi calling.  The other S10 variants also offer it.  These phones are 2-3 years old now but available refurbished from approx £175-£325.  Very nice phones in other respects too.  I got mine refurbished from Qwik Phone and it looked like new on arrival.
