Update: 01 October 2026

Over the past few months, for the permanent mast, due to circumstances out of our control we have been unable to complete the legal negotiations by the end of September. Once the legal steps have been completed, and pending a positive outcome we can start building the equipment needed for the new mast.

We will keep you updated on this post.

Update: 21 August 2026

Our engineers are continuing legal negotiations to agree planning permission for the permanent mast. We expect all legal steps to be completed by the beginning of September. Pending a positive outcome, we can start building the equipment needed for the new mast.

For the temporary mast, we are continuing legal negotiations to agree the lease agreement with the site provider. Once we have an outcome from the lease agreement, we can start building the equipment for the temporary mast and confirm an approximate on-air date.

Update: 24 April 2026

Over the past few weeks, our engineers have been working with the power company to agree a power supply for new mast. We are working with the site provider to arrange a date to access the area to complete checks to determine the power route needed and submit these for approval. Pending approval for the power route, we can start legal steps to legally acquire the land from the site provider and start building the equipment needed for the new mast.

Our engineers have located an area to install a temporary mast and working with the site provider to complete surveys needed to make sure the area will be suitable for a temporary mast. Pending a positive outcome from the surveys, we can start building the equipment needed and confirm an approximate on-air date for the temporary mast.

We will keep you updated on this post.

We are aware of a signal issue that is affecting some of our customers in the Wigan area. Our mast in the area had to be removed from the existing site in March 2026, as the building is being redeveloped.

Our engineers began looking for a new location as soon as we were made aware our equipment had to be removed. We have located an area for the new mast and are currently working with the site provider to access the area and conduct surveys to make sure the area will be suitable for the equipment. Pending a positive outcome from the surveys, we can start legal steps to legally acquire the land from the site provider and start building the equipment needed for the new mast.

Our engineers are looking at other temporary options to restore service as quickly as possible to Wigan.

We will keep you updated on this post.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused. In the meantime, you may be able to use WiFi Calling to make and receive calls and texts over a WiFi connection.

Very interesting articles. As a customer this helps to (to a degree) explain the difficulties EE may have had / is experiencing. What we customers don’t get is reasonable advance warning of the extent of connection problems (rather than EE waiting to ‘field’ complaints as they arise), a relevant and inclusive reduction in monthly payment costs for those in the area affected, and some sense that ‘customers matter’.

The thing is they know what areas are affected yet don't reduce our bills lf it wasn't for my WiFi at home I would have no connection at all. My contract is up this month and I'm seriously considering cancelling at moving elsewhere

Why shuold it be down to us to chase compensation? If it was a broadband issue we automatically get compensated for the loss of service. EE know what area is affected so they should automatically adjust our bills. If it wasn't for my home WiFi my phone would be useless.  My contract is up this month and I'm seriously considering cancelling and going elsewhere

2 hours on the phone it took me yesterday to achieve a 40% bill reduction for 6 months. Shouldn't need to be that difficult.

Might I add, I wasnt calling from MY MOBILE to do this. I couldn't as I dont have any signal... cant make it up! Give me strength ha ha

You could have used WiFi-calling.. as indeed you can do anywhere there isn't coverage but WiFi exists. It's beyond me why anyone thinks "I can't call without signal so I need to mention it" is newsworthy... Give me strength indeed....

You have a mobile phone which is not forced to stay in any location without service.

And what if your wifi was down?  Wifi is known to go down you do realise.  At least when broadband goes down the supplier automatically pays out compensation.  EE should be doing the same for the shambolic mobile service we are having to put up with in Wigan.

Depends whether it's a WiFi issue or a broadband issue - the two are very different. The poster in question didn't make any reference to either, and indeed was able to post on an internet forum.

Have you read the two articles? I'm also not so sure that automatic compensation is as forthcoming as you suggest.

My Broadband is with Virgin Media and you get automatic compensation with them for Broadband issues.  You don't need to phone them to register for it. All you do is on the service status page register the loss of service by clicking the box to say it affects you.  They can check obviously to see if it does.   What EE should do is also have this option on their webpage and not force you to have to ring and register as my guess is they know a lot of people won't bother if it involves calling

To be fair, VM's automatic compensation scheme is mandated by Ofcom regulation.

Broadband services use completely different network architecture & technology to a mobile network - field-based radio sites that often require third party landlords, don't exist in a fixed-line network.
