I found the EE app a useful tool for checking my usage, bills and any incentives available, including, access to my EE up. Recently however the app has stopped logging in and is asking for my credentials. Any ideas for trouble free access again without making a journey to the store?

Upgrade to the lastest App Version.
If that doesnt work, delete the App and Reinstall it again.

I have the 4.64 version, is there a more recent version?

Should be good.
Try option 2, delete the App, Reboot Phone, Reinstall App.

Assuming you're on Android. Go into settings - applications find the app and clear the cache and data.
Then restart the app.
