Hi my contract ends next month. Can you tell me if my account will automatically close when I port my number elsewhere after the end date of my contract or do I need to contact EE?

EE contracts don't automatically end unless you explicitly give 30days notice, or port your number using a PAC or STAC.
In giving your PAC to a new provider, that process will automatically cancel your existing contract.
