Sim Contract ended, but Phone plan hasnt

Not sure if I'm being daft...

A few years ago I took out a contract for a new phone and sim plan. The phone was on a 3 year deal, with the sim deal being a 2 year offer. The Sim deal has now come to an end, with around 9 months remaining on the phone.

I have spoke to EE to sign up to a new Sim plan, while keeping my current phone. Options given to me;

Pay £260+ to pay off the remaining of my mobile plan, or take out an additional line, but i'd get a £10 per month discount as I have two sims, (but i'd still be paying for my old sim and the new one).

Seems stange that I am unable to get a new sim.... or am I missing something?!

You can take out a loan for the phone for up to 4 years, whilst the airtime part is two years, so they may run out at different times. 

Are you after a new SIM as well as your current SIM, or wanting to upgrade your current SIM? Did you ask about upgrading, or taking out a new SIM? Maybe there's some confusion over wording?

Thanks for responding. I think I was clear that it was only the sim I was looking to 'upgrade' (noting that all the sim offers were lower in price that what I'm currently paying)

That's when the agent said that i wasn't able to do this with out paying the remaining loan on the phone (Due to End April 2027), or running it along side my exisiting SIM (for which the contract ran out in May this year)

I'm sure someone will be along who does understand these better than I do, but reading up on them, you can't just upgrade the SIM plan, but you can cancel it and keep paying off the phone monthly.

If you take out a new SIM only plan, you could do the old "PAC dance" and port out your old SIM number to another provider, then back to your new EE SIM plan, which is a bit of a faff I agree but you end up with a new SIM plan, and then also paying off your phone for the next year, and only pay for one SIM. Maybe someone else has a better idea though.
