With Halloween nearly upon us, we've been playing with some Halloween apps and makeup to get us into the spirit of things. Why not give them a go and let us know what you think.

Halloween apps

1. The Walking Dead: Dead yourself

This is a really fun app which allows you to transform yourself into a zombie from The Walking Dead. It's the official free app from FOX.

All you need to do is take a picture with your camera and edit it with lots of cool special effects from the series and then watch your zombie come to life.. sort of.

I think I look rather fetching... no?

2. Halloween Makeup

This photo editor app is great fun, with lots of different sticker effects to add to your selfies. Lets you create Halloween looks and masks and save and share your looks with friends.

I'm going to have to admit that we spent a little longer than necessary playing with this one.

3. Halloween Soundboard

Halloween Soundboard is exactly what it says, it's a brilliant soundboard full of creepy and downright scary sounds that can be used as background noises for your Halloween party or just for laughs in the office, with friends or at home.

What we loved about this one is that you can actually play multiple sounds at the same time, creating your very own scare sounds.

Our favourite effect was the wolfpack.

4. Halloween Live Wallpaper

If you fancy having a frightfully good wallpaper on your phone, this app is for you. There are many backgrounds to choose from and you can customise the wallpaper with a choice of animations, with extra settings for speed, number of effects and more. It can be used on both phone and tablets and supports horizontal orientation.

The only issue is deciding which one to use!

Halloween makeup

Halloween makeup is one of my favourite things to do, I always make my own prosthetics and costumes. I spent a few hours doing something a little fun to show you as an example for our competition. Everything used is available to buy in your local shops or online.

I started off with some standard face paints (both water based and grease paints), masking tape, tissue paper, cotton wool, Vaseline (so I didn't lose my eyebrows), liquid latex, sponges, foam sheets and makeup brushes (now destroyed by the latex so don't use your good ones).

Next came the uncomfortable part... After putting on a very fetching bald cap, which has been used for multiple costumes, I started out by covering my eyebrows and hairline in Vaseline, blanking out my nose and making Groot's wood crown shape with foam sheets.

Next came layers of tissue, liquid latex and cotton wool. To smooth off any sharp edges and create the right texture for Groot's bark. If you are using liquid latex make sure to buy 'skin safe' brands and that you do not have an allergy. Also be very careful around the eye areas.

Last step was paint... lots of it. I used a mixture of water based face paints and costume grease paint with a little foliage from my tomato plant to complete the look. And finally Groot was finished!
