Apps of the Week #1: social networks

We like to think we’ve got a pretty good view of what’s happening in the world of apps. But sometimes it’s not easy to navigate the winding roads of Appville, so we thought you might appreciate a few timely tips.

Each week we’ll bring you three great apps, all focusing on a particular area of your life – from food and films to fun gadgets and furry creatures. How does that sound? Exactly.

This week we’ve been feeling a bit Facebook fatigued, so let’s take a look at a handful of boutique alternatives to the all-conquering Buy n Large of social networks…

  1. Path
One of the most frequent complaints Facebook users have about their ever-present social conduit is that there’s too much going on: too many friends doing too many things, making it hard to keep up. So why not impose a limit? Path is designed to cater for a maximum of 50 friends: your best buds and closest family. It’s essentially a photo-sharing tool – we use it instead of Instagram – but there’s lots more to discover too. It’s mobile-focused, but they’ve just launched an iPad version.

  2. EveryMe
50 friends still too much to bear? Maybe you need a bigger cull! Everyme describes itself as a “private social network” – yes, even more private than Path. You divide your nearest and dearest into circles (like on Google+ - whaddya mean, you don’t use Google+?) and share what you like with them and them alone: memories, old pics, songs, you name it. Everyme’s appeal stems from its simple interface and multiple-walled environment: you can be sure the wrong people won’t see your post by mistake.

  3. Couple
For the ultimate in social network-based intimacy, look no further than Couple: as the name suggests, it’s designed for use only by you and your partner, and everyone else can lump it. You might have encountered this app when it was called Pair, but it’s had a name change and a facelift to boot. Spend all your time Whatsapping pics to your better half and wishing they were online? Couple might be just what you’re after. It’s ideal if you’re in a long-distance relationship, but cute features like ThumbKiss add to Couple’s broader appeal.

Already using one of the above Facebook alternatives? Any others you think everyone should know about? Tell all!

Stay tuned next week when we’ll be shaking and stirring a handful of cocktail apps.
