buying new pay as you go phone

Im a pay as you go user and am wanting to buy a new pay as you go phone off of ee's website. The problem is that it needs to be purchased with £20 top up but i can't tell if this top up is going to a new sim card with a new number or if it will go to my account with the same number. I am logged in on my ee account but there is no mention of where the top up will go and I'm not willing to waste £20 on a number im not going to use.

Hi @lukas5

There's no formal upgrade process with PAYG, so as you probably already realise, you just buy a new phone and use your existing SIM in it.

Whatever conditions that new phone come with, you can either use the £20 credit with the new number and then bin it, or just bin it and lose the £20 - that's upto you.

But the £20 credit will be on the new number, you can't add it to your existing number.

Unless you get a discount buying it through EE I wouldn't bother - the £20 top up will likely come on a new SIM rather than your current one

The £20 top-up comes on the new SIM with the new no. that comes with the new phone. You cannot transfer it to your existing PAYG SIM/no. So as @bristolian advises you either :

  • Use it up on the new SIM then bin it, Or
  • Just bin it & forgo the £20.

Really there's no advantage buying a PAYG phone directly from a network. Rather get it SIM-free from an online seller like Amazon & it'll probably be cheaper. Then you can use your existing EE PAYG SIM straight into it. That way you are paying for what you want.
