I know that’s what they’re saying but in nearly 10 years of trading in phones I’ve never known them not send the first phones out on launch day. It all depends on when orders go through and how they get distributed though the DPD hubs.

Probably because mine new mobile contract have broadband but not had mobile with ee but the ee one deal was too good to pass up

Did you purchase the phone outright / without a line through the EE Store? 

That looks like an EE Store page - as confusing as it may sound, thats completely separate to people upgrading / preordering as part of a phone contract.

Yeah they seem to go with that line every year. I've never known orders not start shipping for delivery on launch day in the past few years preordering with EE (and years preordering on other networks).

The phones normally arrive with distributors a few days prior to launch, ready to go out on the launch-day-eve for delivery on launch day.

I think you're most likely in the same backorder queue as everyone else. The ordering experience is just completely separate.
