I have read somewhere we have until Jan 24 to switch from 3 G in our profile settings  is this correct?

Not quite! If you have only a 3G device you are advised to switch to a 4G or better device.

EE's 3G network is being switched off. If you only have a 3G phone, then it will have always dropped back to 2G as a matter o course, if 3G wasn't available for any reason - post switch-off that will become a permanent thing.

If you already have a 4G phone, you should not notice any difference.
