Apple Watch with a paired plan

Hi All
I bought an Apple Watch with a paired plan.
The set-up on the Apple side was pretty straightforward but as soon as I set it up I got an error message within the Apple Watch app on iPhone saying that “EE does not currently support Apple Watch”.
Not sure what that means but it cannot be good. Also, the cellular icon on my Apple Watch is white rather than green.
If anyone knows why EE can sell unsupported products I’d be very glad to know but most of all I'd like to know if anyone had a similar issue and what they did to make it work.
