Unable to make calls from US

Woddeh

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I'm currently in the US and unable to make calls. I've tried all the usual suspects including changing provider (only have access to T-Mobile where I am) and spending caps, roaming is enabled and WiFi calling has been enabled and disabled for various tests, but no success.

My phone (Pixel 8 Pro) seems to struggle to force VoLTE as there isn't an immediately obvious setting for this, I don't have access to any other phones for UK calls and the chat bot has been wholly unhelpful.

Cheers

Did you receive a Welcome text upon arrival?

Are you on contract or PAYG? Had you used that SIM for making calls or texts in UK before you left to go abroad?

If you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c. Having roaming activated on your EE a/c, not just on your device, is crucial to using your contract SIM abroad.

Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto.

Otherwise if you are on contract you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

Howdy,

I did receive the text, I went on to text ROAMING to 150 once I'd landed but not ahead of time.

I'm a contract customer with the Roam Abroad pass (currently covers the US, I spoke to an EE agent about it recently). I've tried both non-automatic and automatic network selection, but they both only permit access to T-Mobile in my experience thus far.

Unfortunately, rebooting didn't work.

Cheers!

Hi @Woddeh

As you're using a Google Pixel, can you try resetting your network settings?

The steps to do this should be - open the Settings app, navigate to "System," then "Reset options," and select "Reset mobile network settings".

Please be sure to reset the network settings only!

Once you have done this, you may need to switch your device off for a minute or two.

Let us know how you get on.

Just leave EE network…..this is a rip off.  My son is in USA and lost his ability to make calls or use phone without Wi-Fi despite me paying for data roaming and 100mb of data.   That’s all gone now.    No he can’t travel home to activate his SIM before he goes because he’s at university over there…. So EE have changed our contract that is now useless but we are being charged for data we can no longer access.  Rip off.

‘’simple solution we all leave EE and he buys a sim from USA phone shop and we move on
