Roaming in Germany

I am in Germany in an area that only has Vodafone coverage.  Friends with a German Vodafone  chip are getting 4G.  However, while I am getting excellent signal strength, my data is limited to edge (2g) which barely works with most codes and scripts.  Is there a reason why Vodafone is restricting data use age.

Hi @Dewedding173

Have you tried restarting your phone, or manually selecting different networks in Germany?

@Dewedding173 I have exactly the same problem roaming in Germany with Vodafone Edge. EE used to allow 3G coverage for Vodafone but now they’ve restricted it.

Their first choice is O2-DE normally offering 4G but of poor quality. Vodafone 2G is just a backup.

I was able to manually connect to Telekom and I got 4G, but surprise surprise I mentioned it on here and I got disconnected.

Unfortunately EE are providing awful service in Germany :germany: these days. Three however provide Vodafone on 4G, so as soon as my contract is up I’m leaving. I’d advise anyone that goes to Germany a lot to do the same.

I have the same issue.. Can't connect to 4G on Voda or Telekom.

Only 2G is connecting on these networks which means no internet!! And the O2 has no 4G option 🤬🤬:pouting_face:

EE don't strand your clients like this, otherwise we leave!

Hi @Adib ,

Are you able to connect to the official 4G roaming partners which I believe can be found online in a list and are as below as of around 2020?

Germany O2 - 2G - Germany
Germany T-Mobile Germany

I know there are a few threads on here regarding EE and their roaming partners in Germany.

A couple of years ago they partnered with the excellent Telekom (Formerly T-Mobile) network in Germany but in recent years switched to o2-de who provide not only sparse coverage but a poor data connection. The backup network was Vodafone.de who provided excellent coverage but only an Edge service which isn’t that helpful.

I explained this problem to EE’s head office and I have to give them credit, they understood the problem and they allowed me to exit my contract as they understood that this was important to me as I spend a lot of time in Germany and it does affect my connectivity.

There is only one network that roams with Telekom and ironically that is O2-UK! Their first choice is o2-de but they allow a manual connection to Telekom and they give not a 4G but a 5G service!!! In addition to they O2-UK don’t charge roaming fees, so to everyone else that has this problem this is the answer.

I’ve not written off EE, they give excellent service and I’ll keep my childrens phones with them. I’d also go back to them if they sort this not but for now this is the solution I would recommend to all Business people going to Germany :germany:

Just read that somebody said, in major cities. I beg to differ. I was in Munich and Hamburg, sometimes I was lucky, most of the time I tried to find a WIFI I could hook on.

If EE is not sorting that soon, then I have to leave. I spend a lot time in Germany. Not good, if you can be reached and can't get internet.

@Sreynold1   It’s the roaming network that has an issue not the EE network.  EE have no control how that roaming network is operating.

I don't think so. I think when I initially arrived in Germany, I had LTE, but now I have only 2G, making eg. Google Maps and VoIP unusable. The "Welcome to Germany" text said I can use my allowances, but this way, it's just not true. I am pretty confident that the quality of service being provided is subject to negotiation, and EE should be able to negotiate 4G for everyone who has a capable device.
