Game mode is QOS on a router (Quality of Service) they just called it something else and ruined it
QOS is a feature that's been around on routers as long as broadband has been in fact it used too be on EE routers until they thought too themselves HEY! we can market this and charge a monthly sub for it!
Now what QOS does on a router is very simple it allows administrators too set up 1 or multiple "priority devices" that receive the majority of the bandwidth so say for example:
You have an xbox and a pc and a tv you can use QOS too ensure that the Xbox and the pc receive 40% each of the bandwidth leaving 20 for the tv this means all 3 devices work fine but the important ones have zero risk of running in to stuttering or stalling (This is a very basic explanation)
Now this feature is FREE on just about EVERY router on the market
What EE have done is removed the option for anyone too use it locked it behind a paywall subscription and removed its best features
Its hilarious leave it too a greedy corporation too find something they can monetise that works perfectly and mess it up in the process
EE'S Version does not allow you too select which devices you want too have priority it just guesses at what services and programs it thinks are important and allegedly boosts those
"Work Mode" boosts zoom!! cos yeah zoom apparently uses tons of bandwidth and needs too be protected!
(News flash it definitely doesn't the very idea is a joke.)
"Game mode" in my opinion is the funniest however EE guesses which games are the most popular! instead of allowing you too just pick a pc or an Xbox its chosen about 10 games it thinks are very popular and prioritises them on any device (allegedly)
Which is the stupidest thing I have EVER heard but it gets even better
There is something these days called game streaming its becoming VERY popular it does however need huge amounts of bandwidth and very low ping the biggest of these services is called "Nvidia GeForce Now"
EE is VERY aware of this service given they are one of the services partners and it's its bundled it in with a lot of its contract phones THEY SELL IT!
Guess what ? its not included in "GAME MODE"
Because whoever came up with this great idea and implemented it not only stole something that is free on 98% of routers in the world and locked it behind a monthly subscription essentially making an IDIOT out of you for paying for "Game Mode" or " Turbo Mode" or whatever BS they are calling it....
Do yourself a favour go too Argos or CEX or PC World and buy a reasonable priced after market router for around 30-50 quid (Cheapest at CEX u can get a great deal) Replace your EE router with the one u bought
(Dont worry you can replace your router with one you have bought yourself on any broadband service available in the UK its the LAW and its p*** easy)
and GET everything Game mode offers you and far more not too mention a TON of other features EE Super hub
(Super ironic name)
Couldn't dream of offering you and you aren't paying EE and extra £5 per month for the pleasure.. Honestly if you are reading this and you are paying for game mode im sorry too break it too you but EE has made a fool of you.
Your welcome people and F*** Y** EE for your greed and stupidity!
