Openreach friends and family discount codes

I generated two 30% off voucher codes from the employee-discounts.ee.co.uk which apply to upgrades and sim plans and sent them to my other half so she could upgrade 1st and 2nd line ee contracts with new handsets for her and our son. The order was done over the phone only because the advisor we spoke to said we could apply the codes once the handsets are live on the system/delivered.

We received the phones the next day/today and were told the system will not accept the codes. The advisor misinformed us and we would not have taken out the upgrades this way if ee will not apply the friends and family codes to the new upgraded 1st and 2nd line contracts.

 

The question is how can this be corrected since we were misinformed? Seems like a waste of time to send handsets we wanted back only to have to reorder the same ones again to have the discounts applied to the contracts. The must be a better way to process this without having to return the new handsets, etc?
