Why can I not chat online?

I am unable to call as I work in a school and this is not permitted, so my only option is to chat online. My husbands phone is no longer charging and still has a year before upgrade! Can someone pls get in touch via messages pls and help.

Have you tried more than one charger and plug point? What kind of phone is it?
