My phone keeps becoming unavailable for up to an hour for no apparent reason,. The screen goes blank and the device is unusable

Welcome to the community,

Make sure that you have backed everything up and then try a factory reset, you will be able to re-install everything from your back-up, see if that solves the problem.

You will find how to factory reset by going on to Apple’s website, support you can then find it there.
