Old text messages New Phone number

Due to harassing and abusive phone calls and texts. I am seriously considering asking for my number to be changed. I have an Android phone

If I go through with this, can anyone tell me what happens to all my existing text messages from people on my contact list after the change. Are they retained on the phone or do I need to take steps,  with a suitable App, to back up the texts I want to keep.

Any advice would very much be appreciated
