Hi my phone was originally bought by me but using my now ex girlfriends account. Now that we have split up I want the phone in my name . Also I would like the phone to be unlocked from the network but this can only be done by the person who’s account it is How is this done so that she can not ring up and blacklist my phone in the future. Thanks

Welcome to the EE Community,
Once you complete the change of ownership the Imei of the phone will be associated with your account.

Can this only be done with active accounts. This is what I’ve been told. It seems strange that if you wanted to gift an unused handset or sell one you can not transfer the ownership unless there is an active number with the handset. Can you clarify please as she cancelled my contract and I do not have an active account anymore. She does though.

As the contract has been cancelled there is nowt for EE to transfer the ownership of. You may still unlock it yourself as it is effectively a 2nd-hand phone in your hands.
To unlock a 2nd-hand phone you need to call Customer Services on +44 800 956 6000 (option 2, option 4) to put you in touch with the Unlocking Team to request an Unlock Code. You will be asked for your email addy. They will take payment (of £8.99) from any valid UK bank card.
Once the process has been started you will receive an email from the Unlocking Team to process the unlock. It can take up to 10 days to complete the unlock.
But even so beware that EE could still refuse to unlock it. Many phones obtained 2nd-hand have been reported lost or stolen or have money owing on them.
